We have a VERY organized lady in charge as our food storage coordinator for our ward so I thought I would pass along her monthly suggestions for getting your food storage together, as I begin to START mine, yikes! There will be things for your three month supply and for long term as well. It is a great time to get started with our current economic crisis.
Three month: alternate cooking/heating like propane/butane stoves/heaters, paper products (tp, paper towels), diapers, wipes, food storage bags, garbage bags, water storage rotate or begin to store (reccomendations are to store two weeks of water one gallon of water per person per day).
Long term: (these suggestions are being made based on what the cannery is offering that month) beef chunks, beef stew, beans, ham, pears, canned chicken.
Remember, you should begin by building up your family’s 3-month-supply. Purchase items that are needed to accomplish this goal, then move on to your longer-term (year) supply.
If anyone is interested I have two pdf files of recipes using your food storage. Just leave me your email address in the comment area or email me and I will be happy to send them your way.
If you need any other help or info you can access the LDS church Family Home Storage resource by going to this link http://www.providentliving.org/channel/1,11677,1706-1,00.html
It gives reccomendations for water storage, three month and long term food supply and for your financial reserve. It is helpful in calculating what you will need for your family. Good Luck!

Is it bad that this post makes me hyperventilate?? I don't know why food storage gives me SUCH anxiety...I'm working on it though--I swear. Don't worry, we have enough beans for everyone. (Surprise you? I think not.)
I'm interested!! matullis@gmail.com
I am right there with Erin- as of right now my kids will have a Large box of white rice, a big box of granola bars and 2 boxes of kix cereal! I'd like to blame it on the size of our apartment and our current financial situation- but really there is no excuse! I would love the recipes- hopefully our next place will have room?
Hi I just stumbled across your site and I hope you don't me browsing through it (your kids are totally cute!) I couldn't resist asking for those pdf's of food storage recipes. I am working on my long term storage part and run out of ideas of things to cook! My email is info@foodstoragemadeeasy.net. Thanks in advance, I'm really looking forward to seeing them. I wish my ward had a better program for helping with food storage. I've had to figure it out on my own.
A great resource online is www.shelfreliance.com I noticed they are having some pretty good sales right now as well...including the Thrive line of food...super yummy and EASY to incorporate into regular meals.
I am with the hyperventilater! Why is everyone talking about food storage right now? Does everyone know something I don't? What is going to happen!?!?! I swear my sister, my friends at work, my neighbors......they are all talking about food storage! Is it just because it is Fall? My sister has really been working me over about food storage but I keep telling her: I'm more worried about water storage than food storage. I think water is tricky....I'd love to know how you are storing your water.
Thanks so much for sending me the recipes! I am totally going to start trying them.
Micah, My sister-in-law and I are blogging about our food storage as we are learning. Water was one of the first things we worked on. It's really not very hard! You can see what we did here http://foodstoragemadeeasy.net/babysteps/step-2-water/
Hope you don't mind me sharing. We have TOTALLY felt driven to get our food storage in gear lately (we're worried too).
We just STARTED our food storage this summer. I would love to get the recipes from you. walker.jill@sbcglobal.net
